The Core Function of Gears
Power transmission: Transferring the rotational motion from power sources such as engines and electric motors to actuating mechanisms, such as vehicle wheels or machine tool spindles.
Changing rotational speed and torque: By using gear sets with different numbers of teeth, it is possible to achieve speed increase (small gear driving a large gear) or speed reduction (large gear driving a small gear), while the torque changes accordingly (power is conserved, and torque is inversely proportional to speed).
Changing the direction of motion: Special gear configurations such as bevel gears and worm gears are used to reverse the direction of rotation (e.g., for vertical transmission).
Precision indexing: In fields such as horology and CNC machine tools, gears are used to achieve highly accurate periodic motion.
